Dog Training Services
Training a dog in obedience is much more than merely teaching your dog a few tricks that you can impress your friends with. However, there is nothing more impressive than a well behaved obedient dog. When dealing with behavioural problems most of the time the behaviour can be corrected with some form of obedience. If you have to use a piece of food to get your dog to do anything, he is simply amusing you for the food. If you look up obedience in the dictionary you will find that it is defined as "The willingness to follow". This would imply someone is the leader. Dogs are pack animals by nature and have a natural instinct to rise up to the highest level in the pack that they can. They do not seek equality nor want it. In the dog world its "Lead or be led". Who is the leader in your pack? First you must put yourself in the drivers seat. Second you have to develop the willingness in your dog to follow you as the leader. No one wants a dog that does obedience because he feels he has to or else. You want your dog to do his obedience with an enthusiastic willing attitude. At Canadian Canine we use real life methods of training that have proven time after time to get the best and quickest results. This is done by understanding the nature of a dog and using the dog’s natural drives and instincts in an effort to achieve these specific goals:
Focus - Getting the dogs attention is imperative. It is impossible to teach anyone anything if they are not paying attention.
Communication - The dog must know the meaning of the commands once you have the dogs attention, you can condition the dog to associate a certain action with a command or hand signal in order to earn rewards.
Dominance - It is also imperative that the dog looks up to you as the leader of the pack with love and respect and when given a command, simply follows without hesitation. To have a good obedient pet you must achieve all three of these goals to be successful. In the training you receive here at the Academy you will learn how to develop a fantastic relationship with your dog by learning to be the leader rather than allowing your dog to lead you.
Wouldn't it be nice to have your dog walk on a loose leash all the time no matter what? Have your dog lie down and stay during supper when you have your friends over? Know your dog will come to you when you call him regardless of what he is doing? These are only some of the things you will learn at Canadian Canine.

Private Lessons
At the Academy we also provide Private training. This is, by far, the best way to learn how to train your dog. Having your own private coach to teach you and make necessary modifications to your training will ensure you get the results you want. The two main advantages with private lessons are: we can concentrate the entire lesson on you and your dog, customizing the training to meet your needs and the other is that we can schedule your lessons anytime during the day, evening or on the weekend. You also have more flexibility with your training schedule so if you need to re-book a lesson for any reason we can do that and you won't miss a thing.
Duration: The lessons run for 30-40 minutes and are scheduled usually once per week. The course consists of eight one-on-one lessons.
Cost: To be determined based on the nature of your dog's behaviour and how much work needs to be done to correct the problems.
Location: Training takes place at 190 Menten Place, Suite 108, Bells Corners (west end Ottawa).
Motivation: Treats are not used as reward for obedience. Remember we are training your dog to be obedient not training him to do a few trick tricks. This is done by teaching you to be the leader of your pack and to motivate your dog with lots of praise for a job well done and lots of fun and play. You will then have become your dog’s reward.
Prerequisites: The only prerequisite for this course is that your dog has completed the training evaluation to determine the cause of your dog’s behaviour and what you must learn to train your dog to suit your needs.
For more information please call the office at 613-276-3647 or send an email to admin@canadiancanine.com. To schedule an evaluation appointment, please click on "Free Evaluation" in the column to the left to complete a web evaluation form, and you will be contacted soon to schedule an appointment.
Boarding School (CURRENTLY ON HOLD)
The boarding school is quite popular for two reasons. You get results a lot sooner and it gets done properly right from the start since your dog is being trained by a professional.
Duration: The duration of the boarding school is 2 weeks; during this time your dog becomes your trainers personal dog to use for demonstration to teach other people how to train their dogs in all private lessons and group classes. Your dog will get to work with a lot of other dogs and people during the training period.
Accommodations: During the training period, your dog will stay at your trainer's house and travel with the trainer back and forth to lessons. Your dog will be trained in all types of real life routine daily situations not just left in a kennel and given a work out a couple of times a day.
Included in the training are two handling lessons that must be completed by the owner to achieve certification for the dog in the course that he/she was trained in. On the day you pick up your dog, your trainer will do a demonstration of your dog's new abilities. People are generally amazed that their dogs are so well trained and they are quite eager to get their furry little pal home to begin enjoying their relationship. However, it is imperative that the owner be taught how to handle the dog as to maintain the dogs training and that is the sole reason for the handling lessons. Your trainer may also provide after care maintenance training for a lesson or 2 in their group classes upon successful completion of your handling lessons. We also offer boarding only for those that have completed the boarding school. Boarding only is $50 plus tax per night. Your dog stays with the trainer at their home and maintenance training is provided during their stay.
Provisions: You must provide a two-week supply of your dog’s favourite food, a 6 foot leash and 1 training collar. Everything else will be supplied by the your trainer as far as toys, exercise, occasional treats etc.
Cost: To be determined. A quoted price will be given by your trainer during an evaluation based on the nature of your dog's behaviour and how much work needs to be done to correct the problems.
Remember, “We are not a Kennel”.

Group Classes (CURRENTLY ON HOLD)
At the Academy we provide group training. Although this is not the best way to learn to train your dog, the group does have a couple of advantages. One advantage is that your cost is less because you are sharing your training time with other people and their dogs. The other advantage is that the group provides more distractions for your dog during training.
Duration: The course is 8 weeks in total. In lesson 1 we teach you some basic fundamentals of training and help you with any minor behavioural problems. The classes are done once a week and last for 1 hour. We limit the number of students per Basic Obedience class to six and Advanced Obedience to eight only.
Cost: The cost for the group class is $250.00 plus HST. This includes your first lesson and a place in a group class for the training period.
Location: Please see our "Class Schedule" for locations.
Motivation: Treats are not used as reward for obedience. Remember we are training your dog to be obedient, not training him/her to do a few tricks. This is done by teaching you to be the leader of your pack and to motivate your dog with lots of praise, fun and play for a job well done. You will then have become your dog’s reward.
Prerequisites: The only prerequisite for the group class is that your dog is at least 6 months old, has completed the training evaluation at the academy and has been found to have no major behavioural problems such as aggression with other dogs or people or any other problem that we feel that we will not be able to correct in a group environment. For those cases, private lessons will be most suitable to get the results you want.
Space for these groups is limited and registrations are based on a first come first served.

Puppy Kindergarten Class (OFFERING PRIVATE LESSONS ONLY AT THIS TIME - PLEASE CALL THE OFFICE FOR DETAILS)
The Puppy Kindergarten classes are in fact, the most important training course you could ever take for your puppy. The two biggest mistakes people make with their new puppies is they shelter the dog from the outside world and also make the dog dependant on the owner resulting in separation anxiety later on. The first 6 months of your dog’s life is extremely important. His environment during this time will greatly affect his attitude about the world around for the rest of his life. You must use this critical period in your dog’s development, to ensure your dog has a good confident attitude toward everything in his environment meaning, lots of positive exposure to everything he may encounter in his life so he is not fearful of anything. The other mistake is, the owner does not give the dog time to himself and spends every minute with the dog including sleeping. The dog develops dependency and later cannot deal with the stress of being separated from the owner. At the Academy you will learn how to develop a proper relationship with your dog and also develop the proper attitudes in his furry little head so as to avoid those big mistakes people make with puppies.
Duration: The course is six weeks long and consists of some gentle obedience and a lot of socialization in the form of; Puppy playtime, loud noises.
Cost: The cost for the course is $150.00 Plus HST.
Location: Please see our “Class Schedule” for more information.
When: Please see our “Class Schedule” for information on days and times for Puppy Kindergarten group class. We accept new students into the class on a weekly basis pending all prerequisites have been met.
Motivation: Treats are not used as reward for obedience. Although we do use treats in class for other exercises. We will teach you to be the leader of your pack and to motivate your dog with lots of praise for a job well done and lots of fun and play. You will then have become your dog’s reward.
Prerequisites: The only prerequisite for the group class is that puppies are between 12 and 16 weeks old and have had their second round of shots. Puppies must complete a training evaluation at the academy and found to have no major behavioural problems such as aggression with other dogs or people or any other problem that we may not be able to correct in a group environment (this is done by phone in most cases for puppies only). For those cases, private training will be most suitable to get the results you want.
